More Singles Are Fast Tracking New Relationships

Posted on October 9, 2020

Relationship picNEW YORK TIMES – Oct 8 – Americans are dating with an intention that some experts say that they haven't seen before. Many experts, along with daters themselves, say that daters have become more likely to couple up, to lower their standards and to do what they can to find a partner to face whatever comes next. Hinge's surveys indicate that 69% of the app's users are "thinking more about who they're really looking for" and 50% say they are "no longer chasing after people who aren't interested in them." A survey of 2K dating app users Match conducted between July and August, showed that 59% of daters were considering a wider range of people as potential partners and that 55% were fast tracking new relationships more than before the pandemic.

Hinge Rolls out in-app Video Calls, Launches Hinge Labs

Posted on May 21, 2020

Hinge labs picMASHABLE – May 20 – Hinge launches Hinge Labs, the first dating app research program backed by behavioral data and not solely on surveys. The app is now also testing in-app video calls and select markets (Dallas, Denver, Miami, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C.), and will roll out the feature globally this summer. Logan Ury, Hinge's Director of Relationship Science and Dr. Emily Hittner, Hinge's Director of Research, are at the helm of Hinge Labs. Hinge Labs's first project is analyzing video dating. The team sent out a number of surveys to users during quarantine to track how people are using video dating. The data shows that perception of video chatting is different than the reality. While 58% of users cite fear of awkwardness as the top reason for not video dating, 81% of those who did felt no or "only slight" awkwardness.

Dating Apps Buck the Downward Ad Spend Trend

Posted on May 12, 2020

Virtual dating picTHE DRUM – May 12 – When the pandemic hit, many questioned how dating apps could survive. But love in the time of coronavirus is ablaze through video calls. In 2019 the number of dating app users in the U.S. was 25M and Match Group posted revenues of $2.05B. Tinder alone pulled in $1.2B in revenue in 2019; up 43% YOY. Last week, Tinder announced plans to add video dating in Q2. Bumble introduced video calls last year, while Hinge launched 'Date From Home' video feature at the start of lockdown in March. "During social isolation, everyone has had to adapt," explains Naomi Walkland, associate director for EMEA marketing at Bumble. "We have seen users spending more time speaking to each other, with call durations averaging at 21 minutes." After introducing the 'Date from Home', Hinge experienced a 30% increase in messages in March (compared to January and February). Dating apps have admitted their ad spend has been largely unaffected. They have found they are able to buy on platforms that would have been out of their reach just months ago.
