HER.IE – Jan 26 – One study published in Science Advances found that among men who use dating apps, when deciding on what kind of woman they want to date many will choose a woman younger than them rather than a peer there own age. Most men only found women desirable up to the age of 18! Other research conducted by OkCupid a few years ago had very similar findings. Not only are the findings of the research disheartening for women genuinely trying to date through these apps but it is also concerning that so many men are messaging teenagers.

Dating Apps and Videoconferencing Could Be Monitored in New EU Data Rules
EURACTIV – Jan 21 – Dating apps and videoconferencing tools could come under the scope of new EU efforts to monitor online communications in a bid to stamp out child sexual abuse material. In a series of private exchanges between MEPs and Commission services, the EU executive has attempted to clarify a number of concerns related to proposed rules that would allow online communications services to be vetted for child abuse content. In one exchange, the Commission is pressed on whether it considers 'dating apps,' such as Tinder, Bumble and OkCupid, part of the new rules. The response was that while assessments should be made on a case-by-case basis, "the communications features of dating apps may constitute NI-ICS, unless they are merely ancillary features."
How Tinder Became the App That Defines Online Dating
FINANCIAL TIMES – Jan 8 – In the Q2 of 2020, Tinder reported a record 3B swipes in a single day. Shares in parent company Match, whose subsidiaries also include Hinge and OkCupid, traded at a record high in mid-December as it joined the Nasdaq 100. Rival Bumble has taken the opportunity to reportedly file for an IPO. When Match listed in 2015 it priced its shares at $12 each. They now change hands for $153. Success is down to Tinder's relatively simple set-up. Tinder, which accounts for more than half of Match's 11M subscribers, has a subscription level that allows users to see who likes them. This lure has helped Tinder convert free users to subscribers without spending large sums on marketing. Five years ago, Zoosk revealed that it was spending 84% of revenues on marketing before it pulled plans for an IPO. Tinder spent the equivalent of 20% of revenue on marketing in the most recent quarter.

Android Apps Still Vulnerable to a Major Bug
ITPRO.CO.UK – Dec 4 – Security researchers have found major Android apps used by hundreds of millions of people, such as Grindr, Bumble, OKCupid are vulnerable to a known flaw that could give attackers access to the app users' phones and data. The security flaw is in Google's widely used Play core library, which lets developers push in-app updates and new feature modules to their Android apps. Google fixed the flaw in April 2020, but the app developers must also install the updated Play core library in their apps to eliminate the threat. Many developers have not yet done this.

Ethnicity Filters on Dating Apps Raise Questions About Romantic Discrimination
MANCUNIAN MATTERS – Oct 21 – After Black Lives Matter protests shook cities across the world, Grindr opted to remove its 'ethnicity filter', sparking a major debate about romantic discrimination in the digital age. However, many have also expressed opposition to the update, stating that apps should respect the 'preferences' of individual users. Other dating sites were dragged into the mix. Hinge and OkCupid have said that they have opted to continue giving users the option to filter by ethnicity. Match Group argued in a statement by spokesperson Justine Sacco, "In many cases we've been asked to create filters for minorities that would otherwise not find each other."
