Spencer Rascoff’s Fast-Track Strategy to Win Back Gen Z

Posted on October 21, 2025

BUSINESS INSIDER – Tinder is undergoing a major cultural and structural overhaul under Match Group’s new CEO, Spencer Rascoff, as it struggles to regain momentum with Gen Z. After years of slowing growth, just 1% in 2024 and a 7% drop in paying users, Rascoff took direct control of Tinder, flattened its hierarchy, cut staff, and pushed for smaller, faster-moving teams operating like mini start-ups. Weekly product launches replaced twice-monthly updates, and Rascoff introduced a “ship ship ship” culture focused on user outcomes rather than revenue targets. The reset centers on winning back Gen Z, who make up about 60% of Tinder’s 50M monthly users but are increasingly disenchanted with dating apps. To counter this, Tinder has launched features such as College Mode, face verification, and Double Date. The company is also using AI tools to boost user confidence rather than replace human connection. Rascoff’s strategy is to make Tinder faster, leaner, and more collaborative while shifting its image from a hookup app to one that fosters safer, more meaningful interactions.

Tinder Introduces Face Check in India to Tackle Fake Profiles and Scams

Posted on October 9, 2025
Tinder Face Check

NEWSBYTES – Tinder has launched Face Check in India, a feature that asks users to take a short video selfie to confirm their profile photos. Verified users receive a blue Photo Verified badge, helping reduce fake profiles and scams. Match Group’s trust and safety head Yoel Roth said the tool comes at a time when online authenticity is critical. Tinder’s own research shows half of Indian daters prefer meeting in public and over a third use video calls before meeting, highlighting that safety is now as important as chemistry.

Two US Senators Urge Match Group to Act Against Dating Scams on Its Apps

Posted on September 24, 2025
Match Group

REUTERS – On Sept 24, US senators Maggie Hassan and Marsha Blackburn sent Match Group a letter demanding, by Oct 15, details on how Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid detect and prevent romance scams. They warn that the apps’ design can create a false sense of trust that scammers exploit, citing the FBI’s $16 billion in global cybercrime losses last year, including significant losses from romance scams. The letter references Match’s past FTC case and asks for concrete anti-fraud measures as the company introduces new AI-driven features.

LINKEDIN – Spencer Rascoff sat down with Tinder’s Gen Z employee resource group, about 45 staffers, for a listening session on product strategy. They discussed how to make Tinder simpler, safer, and more relevant, with three clear objectives: addressing creepy behavior and incomplete profiles, focusing product efforts on 22–25-year-olds, and reducing pop-ups to streamline the app. Rascoff says these inputs are shaping upcoming changes, including features that show more of the whole person and social experiences like Double Date.

Dating Apps Under Fire: Safety Warnings Aren’t Enough

Dating Apps Under Fire: Safety Warnings Aren't Enough

LSJ ONLINE – Attacks and scams on dating apps have surged, with Australia seeing reports more than double in the past year. Courts have sentenced offenders ranging from adult gangs to teenagers exploiting the platform. Grindr has issued in-app safety alerts and cooperates with law enforcement, but critics argue that warnings aren’t enough. Australia’s new Online Dating Code, signed by major apps including Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, and Grindr, requires safety measures, transparency reports, and stronger user protections. Still, legal experts stress that apps face growing expectations to go beyond alerts, with calls for identity verification, real-time cooperation with police, and proactive safeguards to stop predators before harm occurs.

Online Dating Is Quietly Reshaping Who People Marry

Posted on September 16, 2025
The rise of online dating and heterogamous marriages paper

IFS – A new study from the Institute for Fiscal Studies finds that dating apps are linked with a measurable rise in interracial marriages. In U.S. states where Tinder usage is higher, the share of same-race marriages falls by about one percentage point. The effect is strongest for race, but much weaker for education, where online dating hasn’t shifted patterns nearly as much. The research also notes that race filters can limit this effect, showing how platform design directly shapes long-term relationship outcomes. Interestingly, despite the growth of apps, ~70% of serious relationships still begin offline, according to this study.

DAILY STAR – Tinder sent a legal notice to UK developer Rhys Kentish, who built Tender: Couple Photos & Game so he could only “swipe right” on his wife. Tinder claims infringement over its trademark on the word “swipe” and the similarity between Tender and Tinder. Rhys agreed to replace “swipe” with “pan” but is disputing the name issue.
