TECH CRUNCH – June 6 – Badoo, a UK-based dating app with ~388M users globally – whose majority-owned app Bumble is currently being sued by Tinder in part for its use of swiping – says that it will be removing the swiping from its own app. Badoo is rolling out a new feature called Badoo Live which are live video broadcasts to let people show off their personalities. Users will be able to send messages during a live session, which works on a principle similar to Facebook Live. Once a match is made, users can start a live video chat with each other.

Tinder Is The Most Popular Dating App For Single Millennials
YAHOO FINANCE – June 5 – Millennials are using Tinder more than any other dating app, according to a new survey of young consumers from Piper Jaffray. Of the 294 respondents who indicated that they were single, 27% of single millennials said they use Tinder (vs. 22% of single non-millennials), which is more than double that of Bumble at 12% of millennials (vs. 3% of non-millennials). The Piper Jaffray survey was conducted in April. The firm collected responses from 750 young adults.

After Australia, Bumble To Focus On Growth In New Zealand
NZ HERALD – June 2 – Most Kiwis won't be familiar with the name Whitney Wolfe Herd, but matchmaking app Bumble should ring a few bells. Bumble has been available in new Zealand for three years, with ~1.73 million conversations started. The bulk of users are between 23 and 27 years old and there's a 50/50 gender split. "After a hugely successful 12 months in Australia, we are now focused on growing the already engaged New Zealand market," Herd said. "Bumble is the perfect fit for New Zealand, a country that has always been a world leader when putting women first." The app is available in 144 countries and has ~33M registered users. It has ~80 staff working across six offices and is widely acknowledged as one of the fastest growing dating apps globally.

Facebook’s Lawyers Could Face IP, Trade Secret Challenges
LAW.COM – May 18 – Match Group has been engaged in litigation on multiple fronts lately. Facebook might want to have its in-house lawyers review Match's recent intellectual property lawsuits if the company wants to avoid the potential for litigation in its latest venture. Match filed two lawsuits back in March: one against Bumble, and another similar complaint against Chinese dating app TanTan. Bumble has yet to file a response. Facebook will need to be cautious when hiring any employees from Match to help develop its own platform, attorneys said. Facebook has in fact hired at least 25 employees from popular dating sites in recent years, according to a search on LinkedIn. Two of them were from Bumble and Badoo.

Bumble Launches First Aussie Ads As It Grows Ambitions Outside Of Dating
ADNEWS – May 11 – Bumble is rolling out its first Australian billboard campaign. The campaign encourages users to be the CEO, rather than date the CEO, and not be afraid to make the first move – a core pillar of the Bumble app interface. The billboards went live across Sydney last month and after a successful launch period, the campaign will go national.
Bumble Users Continue To Login Via Facebook Despite New Option
THINKNUM – May 2 – In response to privacy concerns, dating app Bumble on April 16 announced that it would no longer require its users to login via Facebook. However, data shows that users don't seem to mind the Facebook login protocol. Since the announcement user ranks on Facebook for Bumble climbed more than they had in months.
Bumble Is Launching A Female Film Fund
DEADLINE.COM – May 1 – Bumble is launching a female film fund, offering five filmmakers £20K ($27K) to make a short film. It has established Bumble Presents… The Female Film Force and has partnered with stars including Guardians of the Galaxy and Elementary star Ophelia Lovibond and Black Mirror star Georgina Campbell. It is looking to work with writers, directors and producers on the projects, which must be created by all female creative teams.
Online Dating: People Hate It, But Use It
SURVEY MONKEY – May 1 – Nearly a quarter of people have used or are currently using online dating services. For young and middle aged adults (18-44 years old), this number increases to a third. More than half of young adults (18-24 years old) see dating sites and apps as platforms for casual hookups. Older adults are more likely to see them as a means to helping them develop short and long-term relationships. 75% of young adults use Tinder, and 31% Bumble. Adults between 25-34 years old begin to transition to Match.com (36%). 56% of adults view dating apps and services as either somewhat or very negative.
