Lumen – The New App for Over 50s
DAILYMAIL.CO.UK – Feb 13 – Dating second time round can be both daunting and bewildering for many. Launched in September, dating app Lumen hit the headlines immediately. ~250K singles have signed up, making it the most popular app for over-50s in the UK. "The over-50s have been neglected by dating sites for years," says expert and founder of Lumen – Charly Lester. So, given 7.5M over 50s in Britain are single, divorced or widowed, Charly decided to invent the first over-50s app. For their ads, they used a photo of a real-life model, Paul Orchard (age 58), to show mature daters can be sexy and have a sense of fun. Most dating services aimed at fiftysomethings started as websites used on a home computer (eharmony and Our Time) or matchmaking agencies. The feeling was that 'mature daters' wouldn't find apps easy to navigate. But now 73% of those aged 50 to 59 own a smartphone, Charly thinks they're ready to embrace the technology. Lumen is clearly designed and simple to operate.

Tinder and Grindr Failing to Enforce Age Restrictions
DAILYMAIL.CO.UK – Feb 11 - Dozens of children as young as eight have been sexually abused by paedophiles on apps like Tinder and Grindr because they are failing to enforce age restrictions. The figures were revealed by 10 of 46 British police forces. Jeremy Wright, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, described the findings as 'truly shocking'. He added: "I will be writing to these companies asking what measures they have in place to keep children safe from harm, including verifying their age. If I'm not satisfied with their response, I reserve the right to take further action." Tinder said it uses both automated and manual tools to moderate users, including scanning profiles for 'red flag' images, and said it also depends on users to report profiles that may belong to a minor.

Sex on the First Date Is No Longer a Taboo
DAILYMAIL.CO.UK – Feb 4 – Research of 30K single people in the UK, US, Canada and Germany, has found that ~59% of daters are willing to have sex on the first date. German men and Canadian women are the most open-minded. Dating app Jaumo – which was founded in 2011 by Jens Kammerer and Benjamin Roth – also asked their users if they would be open to having unprotected sex outside of a relationship, and surprisingly people were open to it, despite the risk.
Meet the Founder of Righter, a Dating App for Conservatives
DAILYMAIL.CO.UK – Jan 30 – Christy Edwards Lawton, 41, launched conservative dating app Righter last month after a Republican New York model complained she couldn't find a date. She is a banker-turned-elite-matchmaker who says: 'Not on any level would I raise my daughter as a feminist'. Righter targets users who believe that 'men should be men' and women should be 'feminine, not feminist,' promoting traditional gender roles. Christy says they have 20K global users already after a soft launch in December, all of them conservatives looking for like-minded partners. Christy had run an elite matchmaking service called StreetFox previously. Before that, she worked in banking. Righter has given her a new passion and purpose. It's free to sign up, but upgrades cost ~$10 a month.

Oxford University and eHarmony Analysed Online Dating Habits of Brits
DAILYMAIL.CO.UK – Dec 7 – Online daters reach so-called 'dating capacity' once they have contacted seven potential matches within a week, according to the report from Oxford University. The study also found people who considered themselves attractive were less likely to initiate a conversation than those who did not. The research was conducted by scientists from Oxford University's Oxford Internet Institute (OII) in collaboration with eHarmony. The team analysed data generated by ~150K dating profiles set up over the last 10 years.
Dating Apps Could Cause an Explosion in HIV, NHS Expert Warns
DAILYMAIL.CO.UK – Nov 26 – Dr Peter Greenhouse, a Bristol doctor, warned Internet porn is contributing, too. Young people using Tinder could soon trigger a surge in HIV cases because they're more likely to change partners regularly. The NHS has already seen a rise in more treatable infections, which some experts have pinned on the rise of dating apps. But despite the fear of spreading cases, the number of people being newly diagnosed with HIV in the UK is at its lowest level in 18 years. Data released by Public Health England in September revealed just 4,363 people in the country were diagnosed in 2017. This was far lower than a spike in 2005 which saw nearly 8K people diagnosed.
