EUROPEANCEO – Oct 11 – On a professional level, LinkedIn has held the monopoly on networking for some years. "LinkedIn is a platform to find a job or to just maintain your résumé online. It's very conventional and very hard to connect with new people in real life through LinkedIn… that's why we decided to create Shapr, which is a link between dating and professional networking," said Ludovic Huraux, a French entrepreneur who had previously built dating site Attractive World. Shapr has 1.5M in the US, UK and France. It uses swiping, and connections are suggested based on the user's interests and location. Shapr users are limited to 10 – 15 matches per day, which Huraux says helps users to form more meaningful relationships and discourages mindless swiping. Shapr was designed solely for professional networkers, but other dating apps are introducing networking elements such as Bumble. Since the launch of Bumble Bizz, the app sees 17M new matches per week and 64K users joining each day. Bumble itself has hired 11 internal team members through Bumble Bizz.

Young Indians Are Using Dating Apps For Much More Than Just Dating
QUARTZ INDIA – Oct 8 – Last week, Bumble announced its foray into India. Besides Tinder, Bumble will compete with homegrown players like TrulyMadly and Woo. Winning over India may not be easy, since dating apps here are not exactly used the way they are in the West. Launched in 2014, TrulyMadly claims to be the market leader with a monthly download rate of ~65K. The uses of a dating app are pretty standard across the world. But there are a couple of differences in how Indians use them. A lot of 18- 21-year-olds use them to make friends. The 26+ audience uses dating apps pretty much as the first step towards matrimony. TrulyMadly revenue comes mostly from micro-transactions, rather than ads or membership. Users can buy a pack of Sparks to communicate on the platform or buy Select and get matched with the similar type of profiles.

Match Investors Should Worry About Bumble, Not Facebook
BLOOMBERG – Oct 2 – Match investors appear to have gotten over their Facebook fears. When the social media giant announced plans in May to launch an in-app dating feature, Match Group Inc. shares fell 22%. That, however, appears to have been just a blip. The stock is up more than 50 % since May 1 and has gained 81% for the year. But CEO Mandy Ginsberg isn't sitting still. "We'll have to see what happens and keep an eye on it," she said. Jefferies analyst Brent Thill is among those defending Match. He upgraded the stock to buy from hold in June. He doesn't see Facebook as a threat, at least not in the short term. Perhaps Match investors should be more worried about what's going on with Bumble, another millennial-focused dating app, said Thill.
Racism On Dating Apps
THE GUARDIAN – Sep 29 – Sinakhone Keodara is considering suing Grindr for racial discrimination after he received a three-word response on Grindr: "Asian, ew gross." "Over the years I've had some pretty harrowing experiences," says Keodara. "You run across these profiles that say 'no Asians' or 'I'm not attracted to Asians'. Seeing that all the time is grating; it affects your self-esteem." It's important that dating apps take a stand on intolerant behaviour. Bumble's Louise Troen acknowledges the problem, saying: "The online space is complicated, and people can say things they wouldn't say in a bar because of the potential ramifications." Earlier this month, Grindr announced a "zero-tolerance" policy on racism and discrimination, threatening to ban users who use racist language. The app is also considering the removal of options that allow users to filter potential dates by race.
